At Salem Middle School in Salem, teacher Zoma Barrett uses
creative lessons that relate curricular concepts to
the real world, teaching fractions to sixth-grade math
students at the grocery store and using pieces of candy
to demonstrate ratios. She also teaches eighth-grade
computer technology and career education. Mrs. Barrett
organizes and hosts the school’s Career Fair,
which has included the participation of as many as
42 businesses in Salem and surrounding counties. She
serves as teacher advisor for SMS Publications, a student-run
program with three subgroups: a daily televised news
program called "SMS Live," a small business
called Kool Kreations, and a monthly newspaper called
Paw Prints. Mrs. Barrett recently played a key role
in writing a grant to implement the Center for Leadership
in School Reform's Standard Bearer model for systemic
school reform throughout the district. |
