"Each of these school communities can be properly proud of these outstanding educators as top-flight representatives of all Indiana educators," Dr. Reed said. "For me, as Superintendent of Public Instruction, these suprise presentations of Milken Educator Awards each year are among the most exciting parts of my job. It is always a special thrill to join with their students and their friends to recognize the dedication of these special educators. I am proud of every one. They make me proud to be a part of this profession. They are among the best anywhere."

Each recipient of a Milken Educator Award will receive a $25,000 check next June at a conference attended by other new and past winners in Los Angeles. The $25,000 may be used for any purpose the recipient chooses, without restrictions.

The awards program was originated in California in 1985, and its first recipients were chosen in 1987. Selections for awards are alternated annually between elementary educators and secondary educators. Secondary educators are being honored this year. Awards are being presented this year to 150 recipients in 35 states, including Illinois, Kentucky, Michigan, and Ohio. Indiana joined the program in 1993.

This year's awards bring the total presented in Indiana to 28 since 1993. Six awards were made in Indiana in 1993, and five each in 1994 and 1995, and four in 1996 and 1997. Awards in Indiana now total $700,000. The 1998-99 awards total $4 million nationally, bringing the amount of Milken Educator Awards since 1987 to $33.3 million.
