Lowell Milken visits Indianapolis to present one of three awards!

Lowell Milken presenting an awardMr. Lowell Milken, Chairman and Founder of the Milken Family Foundation based in Santa Monica, California, visited Indianapolis to make one of three special presentations of the 2000 Milken Educator Awards in the State of Indiana.

The Indianapolis event took place atTheresa Knipstein new MEA recipient Sunnyside Elementary School, MSD Lawrence Township. After the various remarks and addresses were made, Lowell talked about how important quality education is and how it is important to recognize it and when possible, reward it. Then, he had various students read part of a number, and then it continued to grow with zeroes, until the number reached $25,000! After the wows from the crowd, Lowell announced Ms. Theresa Knipstein as the recipient!

Towards the conclusion of the reception, the Milken Family members in attendance and IDOE officials were asked to come forward for a special presentation by the Indiana Milken Educator Network. Representing the IMEN for this presentation were Marcia Capuano, Jan Weir, Mark Weaver, and new inductee Theresa Knipstein.

Mission Statement presented to Lowell MilkenThe Network presented Lowell with a specially bound and inscribed edition of James Whitcomb Riley's poetry famous for the tales of "Little Orphant Annie" and "The Raggedy Man". Also, Lowell was given a framed certificate with the Mission Statement of the Indiana Milken Educator Network. Mrs. Milken was presented with a special edition collection of recipes of Festivals of Indianapolis with drawings by K.P.Singh. Reverend Rosey Grier was given a copy of Kin Hubbard's book of Abe Martin sayings and Hoosier-isms. Specially selected books with inscriptions were also sent via the delegation to Michael Milken, Joni & Ian Noah, and Jane Foley. Framed certificates of the IMEN Mission Statement were also presented at this ceremony to Suellen Reed and Cathy Danyluk for their contributions and support for IMEN.

Lowell Milken was accompanied by his mother Mrs. Ferne Milken and Reverend Rosey Grier, both part of the Milken Family Foundation Board of Trustees. Lowell's presentation was assisted by Dr. Suellen Reed, State Superintendent of Public Instruction for Indiana, and Mrs. Cathy Danyluk, Office of Student Development of the IDOE and Coordinator for the Indiana Milken Educator Awards and Network. Also present were three previous recipients of the Milken Educator Award in Indiana: Marcia Capuano, ME 95; Jan Weir, ME 97; and Mark Weaver, ME 97. Also, Phyllis Usher, Assistant to the State Superintendent was on hand. The Milken Family Foundation cameras and their crews and MFF personnel were on hand as well to help coordinate and document the events.
