Mr.
Lowell Milken, Chairman and Founder of the Milken
Family Foundation based in Santa Monica, California,
visited Indianapolis to make one of three special presentations
of the 2000 Milken Educator Awards in the State of Indiana.
The Indianapolis event took place
at Sunnyside
Elementary School, MSD Lawrence Township. After the
various remarks and addresses were made, Lowell talked
about how important quality education is and how it is
important to recognize it and when possible, reward it.
Then, he had various students read part of a number,
and then it continued to grow with zeroes, until the
number reached $25,000! After the wows from the crowd,
Lowell announced Ms. Theresa Knipstein as the recipient!
Towards the conclusion of the reception, the
Milken Family members in attendance and IDOE officials
were asked to come forward for a special presentation
by the Indiana Milken Educator Network. Representing
the IMEN for this presentation were Marcia Capuano, Jan
Weir, Mark Weaver, and new inductee Theresa Knipstein.
The
Network presented Lowell with a specially bound and
inscribed edition of James Whitcomb Riley's poetry famous
for the tales of "Little Orphant Annie" and "The Raggedy
Man". Also, Lowell was given a framed certificate with
the Mission Statement of the Indiana Milken Educator
Network. Mrs. Milken was presented with a special
edition collection of recipes of Festivals of Indianapolis
with drawings by K.P.Singh. Reverend Rosey Grier was
given a copy of Kin Hubbard's book of Abe Martin
sayings and Hoosier-isms. Specially selected books with
inscriptions were also sent via the delegation to Michael
Milken, Joni & Ian Noah, and Jane Foley. Framed certificates
of the IMEN Mission Statement were also presented at
this ceremony to Suellen Reed and Cathy Danyluk for their
contributions and support for IMEN.
Lowell Milken was accompanied by
his mother Mrs. Ferne Milken and Reverend Rosey
Grier, both part of the Milken Family Foundation Board
of Trustees. Lowell's presentation was assisted by Dr.
Suellen Reed, State Superintendent of Public Instruction
for Indiana, and Mrs. Cathy Danyluk, Office of Student
Development of the IDOE and Coordinator for the Indiana
Milken Educator Awards and Network. Also present were three
previous recipients of the Milken Educator Award in Indiana:
Marcia Capuano, ME 95; Jan Weir, ME 97; and Mark Weaver,
ME 97. Also, Phyllis Usher, Assistant to the State Superintendent
was on hand. The Milken Family Foundation cameras and their
