On
April 15, 2000, Milken educators traveled to Clay Junior
High School in Carmel, Indiana for spring retreat. Hosted
by Mark Weaver, MEA '97, we were greeted by students and
given a special gift package.
Our special guest attendee was Janet Steele from
the National Milken Educator Network. Welcoming remarks were
made by Butch Bauer, MEA '94. Dr. R. Stephen Tegraden, Superintendent
of Carmel Clay Schools challenged the group as a whole to continue
to evaluate educational issues and supported this cadre of
people. Other special guests were Dr. Barbara Underwood, Assistant
Superintendent of Curriculum and Instruction and Mr. Steve
Dillon, principal of Clay JHS and his wife Amanda.
Janet Steele spoke about the Teacher Quality
Initiative, which will be discussed during the Milken Educators
Conference this summer (2001) in Los Angeles. She also mentioned
that there are now 1500 Milken Educators in the U.S.A.!
Marcia
Capuano, MEA 95, and Sarah Powley, MEA 93, discussed certification
for teachers and what colleges are doing. The group could be
in advisorial capacity to various schools of education. It
is thought the philosophy of education is changing. Sarah Powley
communicated with Jane Foley about this situation. It is important
that "things" get done and that they are not just
show. Professional devleopment opportuniities should demonstrate
standards and assessment usages.
Terry
Spradlin, legislative liaison for the IDoE, gave a very interesting
presentation of the governmental-educational happenings. From
January 10 - March 3, 2000 there were 965 bills (normally only
700-800). As discussions continued, an idea was presented to "Adopt-A-Legislator." It
was suggested that MEA bring this individual into our schools
and let them see what is going on, what is needed, make them
an ally if they are not already. Terry is leaving this position
to run Dr. Suellen Reed's political campaign for re-election
this fall.
John
Frische, MEA 95, and Tammy Payton, MEA 98, presented more information
on Network Communication and also on Technology in the State's
curriculum. Comments were made on the tech associates program.
Dr. Terri Jump from Insights Consulting has observed the MEA
group and evaluated the surveys on what was measurable. She
reiterated that the IMEN (Indiana Milken Educator Network)
should set goals and that it should be determined that there
will be a proper time when this will happen.
In attendance were: Rick Crosslin, Jan Weir,
Christine Danley, Janet Steele, Terri Jump, Terry Spradlin,
Kimb Stewart, Cathy Danyluk, Marcia Capuano, John Frische,
Butch Bauer, Terry Levenda, Sarah Powley, Tammy Payton, Stephen
Tegarden, Rich Allen, Steve Dillon, Amanda Dillon, Sally Davidson,
