On
March 3, 2001, Milken educators traveled to Clay Junior
High School in Carmel, Indiana for spring retreat.
Hosted by Mark Weaver, MEA '97, we were greeted by
students and given a special gift package. The morning
started
off with a patriotic note with the 8th grade choir from
Clay Junior High singing the National Anthem.
Introductions
were made and include the following members of our
Milken Family: Dan Durbin '97, Theresa Knipstein '00,
Rick Crosslin '98, John Frischie '95, Bonnie Fancher '99,
Tammy Payton '98, Marcia Capuano '95, Jan Weir '97, Sarah
Powley '93, Christine Michael '00, Mike Frazier '99, and
Mark Weaver '97 our gracious host
We were
honored with the support and direction of Cathy Danyluk,
State Coordinator, Indiana Department of Education. In
addition, Barb Underwood, Assistant Superintendent of
Curriculum and Instruction for Carmel-Clay schools visited
with us for a short while.
Marcia presented the agenda for the day. Our first
task was to review, finalize and adopt the Indiana Milken
Educator Network By-Laws and they were presented by Mark
Weaver and Jan Weir. Mark presented each of the by-laws
and corrections and modifications were made and were adopted
by the members present.
Below, John
created a flowchart identifying the different Milken
officers and appointed positions relative to their relationship
with each of the others:

Shortly
before lunchtime, the IMEN Brochure was distributed
by Sarah Powley for everyone's review. Cathy Danyluk
stated
that the Indiana DOE will pay for and print the brochure.
General discussion ensued about what information and
heading
should be present on the "cover" page of the trifold. The
wording of the mission and goals will be aligned to the
IMEN by-laws just previously approved. The brochure should
include the IMEN website address along with the Milken
Family Foundation address and the IDOE Coordinator (Cathy)
email address. Theresa, Christine and Mike will be working
together with Kim Stewart (not present) to modify the
brochure's text and design changes. Jan agreed to work
with Cathy to complete the State Network Plan (including
dates) to submit to the Milken Family Foundation. Immediately
preceding lunch, John passed out 3 post-it notes for members
to specifically identify goals that they want to pursue
as part of the IMEN. Goals were placed up on the display
boards.
Dates
were considered for the IMEN meetings for the 2001-2002
school year. The dates included are September 22,
2001, December 5, 2001 and March 2, 2002. These dates
were approved by consensus. At noontime, four members
of the Clay Junior High School Chamber Orchestra played
several pieces from Hayden for the people present. A box
lunch (and wonderful tomato soup made by the chef himself,
Mark Weaver!) was provided courtesy of the Clay Junior
High School PFO. Excellent socializing and camaraderie
was had by all!
After
lunch, John facilitated our discussion of goal setting
(strategies) for this next year. The three groups included
(with strategies delineated):
