(Indianapolis) – The State Board of Education recognized three early college high schools from around the state today at their monthly meeting, continuing a program instituted by new State Superintendent Tony Bennett last month to highlight exceptional educators and education programs.

The “Spotlight on Learning” award was presented at the March state board meeting to Charles A. Tindley Accelerated School, Lawrence Early College High School and Ben Davis University High School. Early college high schools are small schools designed to provide a rigorous college curriculum at the high school level.  While earning a high school diploma, most students simultaneously earn an Associate’s degree or two years of credit towards a Bachelor’s degree through dual credit opportunities.

“Early college high schools have the potential to improve high school graduation rates and better prepare students for high-skilled careers,” said Bennett. “They are one more shining example of ways that we need to diversify and expand the learning opportunities available to our kids in a manner that meets their individual needs."

Currently, there are three early college high schools in Indiana, with another 17 in various stages of development, partnering with nine Indiana institutions of higher education.  Among the higher education partners are Ivy Tech Community College, Vincennes University, Anderson University, IUPUI, Marian College, Franklin College, Butler University, Indiana University and the University of Indianapolis.
