Today, Governor Pence sent a letter to U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services Sylvia Burwell claiming to express interest in future pre-k funding. In response to this announcement, Indiana Superintendent of Public Instruction Glenda Ritz issued the following statement:
“Sadly, we have been here before with the Governor. Over two years ago when the Governor ‘expressed interest’ in seeking pre-k funding, the Department spent hundreds of hours applying for $80 million in federal funding only to have the Governor change his mind and cancel the application at the last minute.
“Because of Governor Pence’s inaction, Indiana is years behind in implementing pre-k throughout our state. Our children deserve better.
“I am focused on the education of our children, rather than Governor Pence’s political showboating.”
