2013 Team Nutrition Grant Offers Free Training and Sub-grants

School Foodservice Excellence Training (SFET) includes training on Smarter Lunchroom principles and applying for the HealthierUS School Challenge (HUSSC). Smarter Lunchroom practices involve using simple, actionable, low-cost steps designed to increase student selection of healthy meal options and decrease plate waste. Sub-grant opportunities are available to schools that implement the SFET training and apply for the HUSSC.

To learn more, please view our recorded webinar which took place on April 8, 2014.     The application period for submitting 2013 TN sub-grants has been extended through the summer. A total of up to 30 schools will be selected to receive the sub-grants and qualified applicants that submit their applications prior to July 1 will be given priority. Team Nutrition is an initiative of the USDA Food and Nutrition Service which supports the Child Nutrition Programs through training and technical assistance for foodservice, nutrition education for children and their caregivers, and school and community support for healthy eating and physical activity. Team Nutrition's Goal is to improve children's lifelong eating and physical activity habits by using the principles of the Dietary Guidelines for Americans and MyPyramid.

  • Hoosier Champions: School Nutrition and Activity Success StoriesThis publication showcases best practices from schools that implemented GameOn! The Ultimate Wellness Challenge. This new resource highlights fun and engaging nutrition and physical activities conducted in forty Indiana schools with funding from a 2009 USDA Team Nutrition Grant. Game On! is a program that challenges schools to incorporate healthy food choices and physical activity into the daily lives of their students. Hoosier Champions is divided into sections representing different activities or events (Food Tasting, Nutrition Education, School Year Kick Off, Outdoor Physical Activity/Fitness, Family Events, School Clubs, Community Events, Before School Events, Outdoor Physical Activity/Fitness and Engaging Celebrities/Professional Sports Teams).

HealthierUS School Challenge (HUSSC)

The HealthierUS School Challenge is a voluntary initiative established in 2004 to recognize schools participating in the National School Lunch Program that have created healthier school environments through promotion of nutrition and physical activity.
