Program and Department Evaluations

The Indiana Department of Education, Office of Career and Technical Education, has developed a document that each Business and Information Technology or Marketing Education Department can use to perform a self-study/evaluation of its own program. This self-study/evaluation is not mandatory. It is intended to assist a Business Department in a comprehensive high school to take a closer look at what is and is not taking place within the department and curriculum and to serve as an additional tool for performing self-studies, such as North Central, Public Law 221, and Performance Based Accreditation.

The self-evaluation process should not require a great deal of time. To be truly meaningful, the self-evaluation process should involve all members of the Business Technology Department. You might find the following procedure to be beneficial:

  • Have each member of the department complete a self-study/evaluation form.
  • Have the entire department meet at a later time to discuss the self-study/evaluation forms.
  • Compile a collaborative self-assessment for the department.
  • Be honest with yourself and each other.

The primary purpose of this tool is to help departments determine what they are doing well and what they need to improve. This might be the very tool that keeps a department alive and well in today's school climate. It is important that once the self-study/evaluation is completed, all members then take steps to work as a group to help the department improve, grow, and thrive.
