The John Robert Gregg Award is presented to an individual whose
outstanding contributions to the advancement of business education
are widely recognized by colleagues and students. Dr. Betty Brown,
Ball State University, received the John Robert Gregg Award at
the 47th awards presentation at the NBEA Convention in Anaheim,
California, in April.
Dr. Brown began her career as a high school business teacher
in Muncie, Indiana. Three years after receiving her Bachelor's
degree in business education from Ball State University, Dr.
Brown earned her Master's degree from the same institution. While
pursuing her education, Dr. Brown continued to teach business
at Muncie Central High School.
In 1971, she received her doctorate in education at the University
of Tennessee in Knoxville and launched her college teaching career
there. She received the Delta Pi Epsilon Award for her doctoral
dissertation and served the university first as an Assistant
Professor of Business Education, from 1971 to 1978, and then
as Associate Professor from 1978-1985. She was named business
Educator of the Year by the Tennessee Business Education Association
in 1982.
Fifteen years ago, Dr. Brown's career came full circle when she
returned to Ball State University as an Associate Profession

and in 1997 received the Outstanding Business Educator Award
form the Indiana Business Education Association (IBEA). In 1998,
she was awarded a Certificate of Excellence from the Indiana
Department of Education for her work on curriculum.
Throughout her illustrious teaching career, Dr. Brown has actively
published and conducted research in the field of business education.
Her professional vitae runs ten full pages! Most recently, she
co-authored the fourth edition of the text, Introduction to Business:
Our Business and Economic World with John Clow. She has also
written workbooks, a teacher's manual, and a test series. Dr.
Brown has contributed dozens of articles to professional journals,
including the NBEA Yearbook, the Business Education Forum, the
Journal of Business Education, and the Journal of Data Education.
She has conducted research in her field funded by the U.S. Office
of Education and by the University of Tennessee, and has written
research-related articles and served as a reviewer for a number
of journals and business associations. For the past three years,
she has assisted in creating curriculum materials for the Indiana
Department of Education.
In addition, Dr. Brown has served on a number of key professional
and university committees. Presently, she is serving her second
term as Secretary of the Indiana Business Education Association
and as a member of Ball State's College of Business Promotion
and Tenure Committee. Dr. Brown belongs to several academic and
professional honor societies, including Phi Delta Kappa, Delta
Pi Epsilon, and Phi Kappa Phi.
In recognition of her impressive achievements, Dr. Brown has
been honored as the 1999 recipient of the John Robert Gregg Award
in Business Education.
We are extremely proud of Dr. Betty Brown and her accomplishments
at the national level. Indiana is honored to have one of our
own receive such a prestigious award. Congratulations, Betty!
Indiana is indeed proud of your accomplishments and the work
you have done in Business Education!
Curriculum
Development Future Plans
Beginning with the 2000-2001 school year, Computer Programming
will be offered in the Business Technology Education offerings
only. In the past, Computer Programming was listed as a Multidisciplinary
course and a Business Education course. The same is true for
Computer Applications courses. This will no longer be a multidisciplinary
course.
We would like to begin development of Computer Programming course
standards and performance expectations in August or October of
this year. A committee of 4-6 individuals will serve as the developers
of the curriculum. If you know of someone in your school who
would be able to contribute to this project, please contact Barb
Beadle immediately!
We also plan to revisit the Computer Applications course standards
and performance expectations. We are looking for individuals
who are innovative and visionary. Teachers who are teaching an
office suite in a Windows based environment and incorporating
high-end technology such as multimedia, desktop publishing, web
design, etc. are candidates for this committee. We are looking
for 4-6 individuals who will meet October-January to revise this
curriculum. If you know of someone in your school who would be
able to contribute, contact Barb
Beadle immediately!
- Voice Recognition Software
At the NBEA Contention in Anaheim, a software company agreed
to donate 15 copies of voice recognition software to each state
department. Since voice recognition software should be included
as part of the computer applications and vocational curriculum,
we are looking for 15 individuals throughout the State who would
be willing to attend a three-day workshop in August or October
to train on the software and serve as trainers throughout the
State. Once again, we are looking for innovative teachers who
have a desire to move their curriculum forward and are also willing
to provide training for other teachers during the next three
years. If you are interested in this training, please contact
Barb Beadle immediately at bbeadle@doe.state.in.us.!
- Financial Knowledge for Investing
Financial Knowledge for Investing is a CD Rom that provides financial
resources in investment. The CD may be used in such courses as
Global Economics and Personal Finance. The Indiana Department
of Education, Office of Career and Technical Education, is looking
for four teachers who will be teaching Global Economics and four
teachers who will be teaching Personal Finance to attend a one-day
seminar in Lafayette during the summer. Tentative dates have
been set for August 7 and/or 8. The purpose of the meeting will
be to brainstorm potential possibilities for statewide rollout
of Financial Knowledge for Investing. In addition to the above
individuals, there will also be four representatives from Consumer
Economics and four from Economics. If you would be willing to
serve on this Advisory Committee, please contact Barb
Beadle immediately. Provide address, email, and phone number
where you can be reached during the summer.
2000-2001
In Service Workshops
During the 2000-2001 school year, our focus will be on providing
in service workshops throughout the State in the following areas:
Global Economics, Technical Business Communication, Business
College Level, Vocational Business Programs, etc. Training will
be offered in at least two locations throughout the State for
each area. The Vocational Business Programs in service will be
provided on Friday, November 17, at the BE/ME Fall Conference.
Please watch for details on these in service workshops, especially
if you are planning to teach in these areas.
- Economics Summer Workshops
The Indiana Council on Economic Education has several summer
workshops planned. These workshops would be helpful to those
planning to teach Global Economics or other business and marketing
courses. Visit ICEE at http:///www.mgmt.purdue.edu/icee
for a list of the 2000 ICEE Summer Workshops. Take this opportunity
to enhance your economics teaching skills by attending one of
these workshops.
- In Baskets & Internet Workshops
We still have a number of opportunities for the In Basket and
Internet Workshops planned for this summer in Indy. The In Basket
Workshop will be held July 10-14 and the Internet Workshop July
31-August 4. Three hours of college credit are available for
each class. Visit the web site at www.doe.state.in.us/octe/bme
for a registration form.
