Financial Literacy Education (FLE) in Indiana's Schools

Financial Literacy Education

Financial literacy is the ability to use knowledge and skills to manage one's financial resources effectively for a lifetime of financial security.  Financial literacy is a continuum of evolving abilities, subject to variables such as age, family, culture, and residence, that individuals use to respond to every-changing personal and economic circumstances.

The framework for Financial Literacy Education in Indiana describes the knowledge and skills financially literate students should have in six major categories and at three benchmakr grades - 4th, 8th, and 12th.  The framework provides standards and benchmark indications for educators that:

  • suggest the range of content students should know and be able to act on,
  • provide guidelines for evaluating curriculum, instruction, and student learning,
  • help shape planning for lessons, units, and course; learning and assessment activities; and textbooks and other instructional materials.
