Students were not only challenged to create Gatorade bottle designs, but they also had to convince industry experts Thursday why their projects should be used in the market place. The 25 Crawfordsville High School student designers are members of Doug Showalter’s “Introduction to Engineering Design” class. The course is part of Project Lead the Way’s pre-engineering program. Kevin Osborn, engineering manager at Alcoa CSI, and Jerry Barnett, products engineer at Raybestos Products Co., judged products during the morning presentations.

Ball State University Student Competitive Event Day

Description:
More than 150 high school students visited Ball State Oct. 19 for the Department of Industry and Technology’s fall conference. Dillon Rinker, a freshman at Blackford High School, shows off a device he’s constructed and initiates a design sequence that will pop a balloon. Visiting students toured campus, met faculty members and participated in competitive events.

 

• Valparaiso High School Technology Students at the Ball State University Competitive Events Day PDF

Description:
Valparaiso High School Technology Students competed on October 19, 2004 at the Ball State Competitive Events Day in Muncie, IN. The Department of Industry and Technology sponsored the competition and judging was done by College Professors in the IT Department. Valparaiso High School students competed in six events and won championship honors in three of them. A total of 12 schools from Indiana competed in the event.

 

• VHS Technology Students at Stadium Construction Site PDF

Description:
Students in Mr. Gary Gray’s Civil Engineering and Architecture class were given an on site lesson of steel framing by Mr. Bill Foster, steel erection sub-contractor for Larson-Danielson Construction and Engineering Inc. The students were instructed on the delivery, sizing, erection and fastening techniques used to build the new football stadium at Valparaiso High School. Mr. Foster, of Stevens Ironworks also described the procedures used to locate the hot-dipped galvanized steel members from the designer’s drawings and how some fabrication takes place on the site. Safety and crane operations were also topics of instruction. The students have been following the procedures while studying steel structures in this Project Lead the Way, Pre-Engineering class at VHS.

Indiana High School Design Competition: VHS Technology Students named Finalist, April 26, 2004 PDF

Description:
Students in Gary Gray’s Civil Engineering and Architecture (CEA) class at Valparaiso High School recently participated in the Indiana High School Design Competition sponsored by the American Institute of Architects-Indianapolis Chapter in Indianapolis, Indiana. The design challenge was incorporated into the CEA classes unit study of Architecture.

2004 PLTW Design Challenge: VHS Technology Students Awarded for Teamwork in Design PDF

Description:
The Valparaiso High School Engineering and Design Team competed in the 2004 Engineering Design Challenge at Rensselear High School. The contest was between high schools in Indiana that offer the “Project Lead the Way” Pre-Engineering curriculum and was sponsored by Purdue University, the Indian Trails Career Cooperative and the Indiana Department of Education. The Valparaiso High School Team was awarded the BEST in TEAMWORK DESIGN for their effort.

Prof helps teens learn to help dogs live better

Description:
The Ball State University professor, who teaches technology teacher education, has been working with 26 students at Cowan High School since the start of the school year. The class is building seven dog houses that will be donated to local animal welfare groups such as HARM (Helping Animals Receive Mercy) and ARF (Animal Rescue Fund).
