Overview:
The purpose of this grant endeavor is to
assist Indiana school districts to acquire library books and
newspapers. CD-ROMs, magazines, computer software, videotapes,
or related media may not be purchased with these funds. Money
from these grants must be matched dollar-for-dollar within
the districts by local funds spent for the acquisition of library
books and newspapers for K-12 schools. Sources for the local
matching funds may include monies from the general fund and
certain federal programs as well as those from donations, foundations,
parent organizations, and fund raisers.
Books and newspapers purchased with grant
and matching funds are for public schools serving any level,
K-12. The purchases should emphasize recreational reading.
Reference materials are not to be purchased with this grant.
This is a funding disbursement, not a
competitive grant process. The maximum amount for which a school
district may apply is determined by a formula of $3.05 per
student per year for the period from July 1, 2001-June 30,
2003, as reported in the 2000-2001 Pupil Enrollment Report
(DOE-PE) [$6.10 per Pupil Enrollment for the two-year period].
Grant application/agreements will be accepted from October
1, 2001, through May 3, 2002. Districts should refrain from
requesting grant funds until the matching funds are in place
and the district is ready to begin ordering books. Grant funds
will be available in two equal payments beginning October 1
upon receipt by the Indiana Department of Education of the
completed application/agreement form. The first disbursement
shall occur approximately two weeks after receipt of the completed
application. The second disbursement will be distributed after
July 1, 2002. All grant and matching funds should be expended
no later than June 30, 2003.
