Eight Steps to Highly Effective Next Generation Professional Development for Learning and Technology

Build a Vision
for How Technology Impacts Student Learning

A very successful school district superintendent in an economically depressed, rural area once said, "Dollars follow vision." He was able to build a 21st century vision for learning so compelling that even serious economic challenges didn't stop his community from building the Digital Age learning system they knew their students would need to succeed.

Your own professional development for learning technologies should be based on a vision of what your learners need to live, learn, and work in the Digital Age. The best visions are shared by all stakeholders; it should clear to everyone what the vision will look like in practice.

Guiding Questions
  • What does it mean to be educated in today's knowledge-based, global society?
  • What knowledge and skills do students need?
  • What will teachers and students be doing in a digital-age learning environment?
  • What tools and resources will they need?
