Eight Steps to Highly Effective Next Generation Professional Development for Learning and Technology

Set Goals
for Professional Development that Build Toward the Vision

Think about technology from at least two perspectives: it changes what is taught and it changes how students learn. Ground expectations related to technology use for teachers, administrators, and schools in the outcomes desired for students. Once a clear vision has been established, build scenarios around that vision to increase understanding of what it will look like in the classroom and the throughout the school. All teachers and administrators should clearly see their roles, responsibilities, and the new proficiencies they will need to truly support student learning with technology.

Guiding Questions
  • Based on your 21st century vision for student learning, what knowledge and skills do teachers and administrators need?
  • What can a school do to ensure that teachers and administrators set strategic professional development goals that support the vision?
  • What is the potential role of technology?
  • What resources do educators need in order to achieve their professional development goals?
