Eight Steps to Highly Effective Next Generation Professional Development for Learning and Technology

Link Strategies
to Professional Development Goals

'Next generation' professional development strategies are unique, but they can also augment conventional strategies that may be working well in your district or in similar districts. Familiarize yourself with 'next generation' professional development strategies and the contexts in which they work best, then match them to the professional development goals you developed in Step 2. Combined with a 21st century vision and contemporary technologies, these strategies can be used to customize professional development in order to prepare teachers and administrators to lead high-performance, digital-age learning organizations.

Guiding Questions
  • What does 'next generation' professional development look like and how does it differ from what you are currently doing?
  • What professional development initiatives does your school or district currently support?
  • How might technology enhance and be embedded in these efforts?
  • Look outside your field. Could you learn from business and industry innovations?
  • What 'next generation' strategies best align with your school and district's culture, goals, and identified needs?
