Eight Steps to Highly Effective Next Generation Professional Development for Learning and Technology

Identify Time and Resources
Available for Professional Development

Professional development approaches depend on a variety of factors, such as school culture, leadership, the level of engagement in school improvement processes, attitudes toward professional development, and the time officially allotted to professional development through formal contracts.

In most schools and districts, time is a precious commodity. But it is important to take the time to consider your assets and liabilities. What will make you more successful in bringing relevant, meaningful professional development into your school or district? What barriers will you need to overcome?

Guiding Questions
  • How does your school currently provide time and resources for professional development?
  • What resources are needed to support 'next generation' professional development goals?
  • How is time provided for effective, 21st century professional development?
  • How might you use time and resources differently in your school to support your professional development goals?
  • How do the 'next generation' strategies you have selected address current barriers to professional development in your school or district?
