Eight Steps to Highly Effective Next Generation Professional Development for Learning and Technology

Establish Conditions
Essential for Teachers to Implement What They Learn

Just training educators and installing infrastructure is not enough to meet the needs of the Digital Age. To get the greatest value from technology-related professional development, system-wide policies and practices must change in ways that support educators in putting what they learn into practice. Leadership, assessment, curriculum design, technical support, equitable access, and staff performance reviews should reflect a school culture that encourages innovative uses of technology.

Guiding Questions
  • How will your school create and sustain a learning environment that encourages 'next generation' strategies?
  • How will stakeholders - especially teachers - be supported and encouraged to take risks to enhance teaching and improve learning?
  • How will your school provide opportunities for teachers to try out what they learn in their classrooms, to talk with colleagues about their successes and failures, and then to adopt the strategies that work?
