TECH TIP #3: Left-over Results

Situation: Your class is using the INSPIRE Kids interface to do research. Several students report they get results from their first search OK, but when they do a second search, they get results from their first search again.

Solution A: Actually, this can happen on either the regular INSPIRE interface or the INSPIRE Kids interface. Look at the settings on your web browsers. Make sure they are checking for new page content each time a new search is done. First exit out of INSPIRE Kids by clicking on Quit c End.

In Netscape go to Edit -- Preferences. Click the + by the Advanced line. Click on Cache. Click these 2 buttons: Clear Memory Cache -- OK, Clear Disk Cache -- OK. In the same box at the bottom a line says: Document in cache is compared to document on network. Select: Every time, and click OK to close the box. Then close and reopen Netscape.

In Internet Explorer go to Tools (or View) -- Internet Options -- General tab. In the middle of the box under Temporary Internet files, click on the Settings button. At the top of this new box, it says Check for newer versions of stored pages (or something similar). Select: Every visit to the page. Click OK. This takes you back to the General tab box. Click on the Delete Files button by Temporary Internet files. Click OK to close the box.

Solution B: This needs to be discussed with your school technical staff. The settings on your school's proxy server may have caused the same results to be returned on later searches. The proxy server may be caching old searches. Your proxy server needs to be set so it does not cache any web page with a question mark m? in its URL. In some proxy servers this is the default setting.

As an example, in the INSPIRE interface each user is assigned a unique session ID number that appears in the URL, just after the question mark. (This number is not actually visible on your web browser until you log out of INSPIRE.) This session number helps servers keep track ofsearches and results.
