Pleasure
Reading to Enhance Academic Performance
With Indiana
Public Law 221 and federal legislation on No Child Left Behind,
Union City Community High School
has established
a priority on improving students’ reading levels.
This is evidenced by our school wide goal for both the
state and the North Central Association.
One
of the school’s
goals is to reach predicted reading levels on the norm-referenced
section of the ISTEP+ English
Language Arts test for all groups and increases the number
of students passing the English Language Arts section of
the ISTEP+/GQE on the first attempt. This is one of the
criteria
that have been established under Public Law 221. In an attempt
to attain this goal UCCHS has taken a whole school approach
to reading. One of the first steps taken was to establish
DEAR Day (Drop Everything and Read Day) for twenty minutes
each
week. This has evolved into a competition with two other
high schools in the area. This program has proven to be
a powerful
tool for students to increase reading skills and has carried
over into the classrooms and homes. In addition, Shelley
Hillard and Holly Stiggleman have developed an on-line
resource for
classroom teachers and media specialists to consult when
designing a creative school wide reading program. This
validates the
importance of planning and involving everyone in the school
community in attaining school goals.
We
invite you to view the information and look forward to your
questions and comments.
