Reading is Fundamental

RIF LOGOReading Is Fundamental, or RIF, is a national nonprofit organization that has worked with groups since 1966 to promote reading among young people.

The premier literacy organization of its kind, RIF makes reading fun through exciting motivational activities that culminate in "book distributions" -- opportunities for children to choose and keep books at no cost to them or their families. RIF brings books to children through a network of local activities run by volunteers.

Each year the Indiana Department of Education awards competitive Mini-Grants to fifty-to-sixty schools for them to design their own activities for the distribution of free paperbacks to children. By allowing the children to select and keep books of their own choosing, and by showing them that reading is both important and fun, RIF motivates them to want to read.
