Indiana Statehood Resources

Indiana was formally admitted to the Union as America’s 19th state on December 11, 1816. To help celebrate this historic day in Indiana history, the Indiana Department of Education has provided educators with links to websites that offer classroom/teacher resources for Indiana Statehood Day. Many of the websites offer suggested activities and lesson plans that educators can use in their classrooms for Indiana Statehood Day as well as historical information and facts about the State of Indiana.

Digital Collections of IUPUI University Library

The digital collection offers a variety of primary sources that educators can access. Twenty-four primary sources are available, dealing mostly with issues that led to Indiana statehood. Each link gives a brief description of the importance of each primary source, making this site particularly helpful for users.

Easy Fun School

This particular webpage offers suggested activities that educators can use in their classrooms. Many of the activities and lessons are designed in a cross curricular manner, providing educators with the opportunity select activities that are appropriate for their own classroom. Activities focus on topics such as the state flag, building a mini-museum, Native Americans of Indiana, early pioneers, and Indiana statehood.

Indiana Historical Bureau

The Indiana Historical Bureau has developed a webpage where educators can access the Indiana’s first constitution (1816) as well as the current constitution which was written in 1851. This webpage also offers educators documents such the Ordinance of 1785, the Northwest Ordinance (1787), and the Treaty of Greenville that led to Indiana statehood.

The Indiana Historical Society offers a webpage where educators can access facts about the state of Indiana. This webpage supplies answers to frequently asked questions about Indiana. Topics such as the state seal, the state song, the state flower, and the meaning of “Hoosier” can be accessed from this webpage.

Indiana Humanities Council

This particular webpage offers educators access to lesson plans and other resources for events and issues that led to Indiana statehood. Organizations such the Indiana Humanities Council, Indiana Historical Bureau, Historic Southern Indiana, and the Indiana Supreme Court have contributed over thirty primary sources and lesson plans.

Northern Indiana Center for History

The Northern Indiana Center for History has developed a webpage that provides educators with an extensive history of the State of Indiana. Educators will be able to access information that will be helpful for planning lessons and activities. Topics include Native American tribes, the settlement of Indiana, conflicts between settlers and Native Americans, Indiana as a territory, Indiana becoming a state, and many more issues and events of this time period.
