The Indiana Department of Education aims to provide practical information and discussions that will enhance the execution of "teaching or programming driven by students' needs" via culturally responsive teaching, and often known as exercising cultural competency. In her article, "Preparing for Culturally Responsive Teaching" (2000), Geneva Gay suggests that "Culturally responsive teaching is defined as using the cultural characteristics, experiences, and perspectives of ethnically diverse students as conduits for teaching them more effectively."

The characteristics mentioned within this definition provide us with a framework to base our discussions going forward. Discussions are encouraged as we continue to enhance our knowledge of how to best meet all students' needs.
