This vehicle stops at all railroad crossing decal mandatory for all special purpose buses.

Since the passage of Senate Enrolled Act 305 creating the requirement for a special purpose carrying a passenger to stop at a railroad track at grade, school corporations and other transportation providers have expressed concern to the division for the potential of rear end collisions when obeying the statute. School Corporations and transportation providers have requested permission to display a decal stating, ‘This vehicle stops at all railroad crossings.”

The State School Bus Committee met on July 27, 2006 to address this matter. The Committee approved the decal with the following provisions:

  • Beginning September 1, 2006 each special purpose bus must display on the rear bumper beneath the rear emergency door (equivalent location for a rear engine transit school bus) a decal stating, “This vehicle stops at all railroad crossings.”
  • The decal is not authorized for school buses.
  • Maximum decal size must 150 square inches.
  • A company name, logo, or other commercial advertisement on the decal is prohibited.
  • The decal may contain symbols or pictures of standard railroad signage. E.g. cross buck, advance railroad crossing warning
  • There is no color requirement for the decal.
