Indiana Motorcycle Safety Program
Rider Coach Application

Thank you for your interest in becoming an Indiana Motorcycle Safety Program Rider Coach. I will outline the steps you will need to complete to join in this highly rewarding and demanding endeavor. To be considered you must be a licensed, experienced motorcyclist who rides on a frequent basis. You should have good communication skills and have a sincere desire to help reduce motorcycle accidents, injuries and deaths by training new and experienced motorcyclists in the safe and proper operation of a motorcycle.

Selection is based upon need for Rider Coaches in a specific area. This need is determined by the sponsor and Site Coordinator of each training site. When selected as a Candidate it will be necessary to attend several segments of BRC classes in progress. Candidates are encouraged to help as range aids, assist Rider Coaches setting up exercises, help prep training motorcycles and observe how classroom units are conducted. This participation should be coordinated with the Site Coordinator. When the Candidate has fulfilled this requirement the Site Coordinator will recommend them to the State Training Specialist for participation in a Rider Coach Preparation class (RCP).

The RCP is conducted by Rider Coach Trainers. There are three parts to successfully completing the RCP. First the Candidate must attend a two day BRC class and pass the skill evaluation. This class will be scheduled for Rider Coach Candidates only.

The next phase is the Rider Coach Training. This is a four day program consisting of training in how to conduct BRC classroom units and range exercises, range management, course paper work and familiarization with all class materials. A knowledge evaluation is conducted on the fourth day to evaluate Candidate understanding of the Basic Rider Course and their responsibilities when teaching classes. To move to the third and final phase of the training, Candidates must pass this evaluation.

The RCP culminates as all Candidates conduct a complete Basic Rider Course for a class of new riders. Your teaching performance will be evaluated by the Rider Coach Trainers. Successfully completing student teaching is your final requirement to qualify for MSF certification as a Rider Coach.

You must attend all three sessions of the Rider Coach Prep class and you should have your time free of other responsibilities during this period. All course materials are provided and there will be some pre-course home work that must be completed and returned prior to the start of the RCP. There is a twenty five dollar course tuition fee required on the first day of class. Candidates who successfully complete the course, and after teaching a minimum of three classes in the Indiana State Program will receive a one hundred dollar honorarium to help off-set costs. Candidates are responsible for their own travel, food and lodging expenses incurred during the RCP.
