School Bus and Vehicle Types

Type A: A type “A” school bus means a conversion or body constructed upon a van-type or cutaway or front-section vehicle with a left side driver’s door, designed for carrying more than ten persons. The term includes two (2) classifications:
(1) Type A-1, with a gross vehicle weight rating of ten thousand (10,000) pounds and under: and
(2) Type A-2, with a gross vehicle weight rating of over ten thousand (10,000) pounds. State School Bus Committee Rules, Title 575 IAC 1-1-1.

Type B: A type “B” school bus is a conversion or body constructed and installed upon a van or front-section vehicle chassis or stripped chassis with a vehicle weight rating of more than 10,000 pounds and designed for carrying more than ten persons. Part of the engine is beneath and/or behind the windshield and beside the driver's seat. The entrance door is behind the front wheels. State School Bus Committee Rules, Title 575 IAC 1-1-1.

Type C: A type “C” school bus is body installed upon a flat back cowl chassis with a gross vehicle weight rating of more than 10,000 pounds and designed for carrying more than ten persons. All of the engine is in front of the windshield. The entrance door is behind the front wheels. State School Bus Committee Rules, Title 575 IAC 1-1-1.

Type D: A type “D” school bus is a body installed upon a chassis with the engine mounted in the front, midship, or rear with a gross vehicle weight rating of more than 10,000 pounds and designed for carrying more than ten persons. The engine may be behind the windshield and beside the driver's seat, at the rear of the bus, behind the rear wheels, or midship between the front and rear axles. The entrance door is ahead of the front wheels. State School Bus Committee Rules, Title 575 IAC 1-1-1.

Type E: A special purpose bus means any motor vehicle designed and constructed:
(1) for the accommodation of more than ten (10) passengers;
(2) that:
(A) meets the federal school bus safety requirements under 49 U.S.C. 30125 except the:
(i) stop signal arm required under federal motor vehicle safety standard (FMVSS) no. 131; and
(ii) flashing lamps required under federal motor vehicle safety standard (FMVSS) no.108;
(B) when owned by a school corporation and used to transport children, complies with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations as prescribed by the United States Department of Transportation Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration as setforth in 49 CFR Chapter III Subchapter B; or
(C) when owned by a school corporation and used to transport children, is a motor coach Type bus with a capacity of thirty (30) or more passengers and a gross vehicle weight rating greater than twenty-six thousand (26,000) pounds; and
(3) that is used by a school corporation for transportation purposes not appropriate for school buses.

Type F: A type “F” school bus is equipped for transporting the handicapped. It will be a type A, B, C, or D school bus with specialized equipment. (e.g.,wheelchair lift or ramp)

Passengers


“Newborn” means a child from birth to one month of age who is transported in a school bus or special purpose bus, regardless of mileage, to a school corporation program.

“Infant” means a child from one month, one day to one year of age who is transported in a school bus or special purpose bus, regardless of mileage, to a school corporation program.

“Toddler” means a child from one year, one day to three years of age who is transported in a school bus or special purpose bus, regardless of mileage, to a school corporation program.

"Pre-school" means a child from three years, one day to five years of age who is transported in a school bus or special purpose bus, regardless of mileage, to a school corporation program.

“Non-Public” means a parochial or private school pupil transported by a public school bus.
