Re: Approval of new features
Date: December 14, 1998
This memorandum contains information on two recently approved features. Both features are optional.
Child Alert Notification System
Specification Language
A child alert notification system may be used.
The device must be installed in a manner that will not effect or interfere with any other existing operating or electrical component (e.g., turn signals, brake lights, stop signal arm, etc.)
The device must permit the driver complete control of the ignition switch and not interfere with engine operation or shutdown.
When the ignition switch is in the ON or ACCESSORY positions the device is in a stand-by mode and is silent. The device must have an indicator light, within the normal view of the driver, indicating the device is operational and in stand-by mode. The indicator light must be labeled and identified.
When the ignition switch is turned to the OFF
position, a timer is automatically set. The amount of time delay
cannot exceed one minute and may be programmable up to the maximum
limit.
page 2, December 14, 1998
The device may emit a reminder tone or signal during the time delay period. When the time delay expires, the device will activate the horn, if the driver has not pressed the re-set switch or turned the ignition switch to the ON or ACCESSORY position. The horn must sound intermittently and continuously until the re-set switch is pressed or electrical power is restored with the ignition switch.
The re-set switch must be a push button type. A key type re-set switch is prohibited. The re-set switch must be mounted at the rear of the bus, interior side, behind the rearmost passenger seat or wheelchair location.
An override (bypass) capability is prohibited.
Anti-vandalism Lock for Special Service Entrance Door
An anti-vandalism device on a special service entrance door (wheelchair lift access) may be installed. The lock must function according to the anti-vandalism lock requirements for emergency doors as specified in Title 575 IAC 1-7-5(b), Anti-vandalism Device.
For ease in reference, the relevant portion of Title 575 IAC 1-7-5(b) states: If placed on the emergency door, the device must prevent the bus's ignition system from activating, if the emergency door is lock or inoperable from either the inside or the outside of the bus. The device must audibly alert the driver and prevent the engine from shutting off if the door lock is closed after the engine has started.
