Re: Final rule on labeling
Date: January 23, 2002

Public Law No. 51-2000, as amended by P.L. No. 278-2001, directed the State School Bus Committee to promulgate rule for labeling new school buses with the school corporation identification number on the rear of the bus. Please note the requirement for the school corporation name on the school bus roof was repealed by P.L. No. 278-2001 and is not part of the final rule. The rule, found at 575 IAC 1-1-4.5, is attached PDF.

  • The rule applies to all new school buses with a body build date of July 1, 2002 or after.
  • The identification number is to appear on the rear emergency door between the upper and lower windows. On rear engine Type ‘D’ buses (transit bus) the identification number is to appear in a corresponding location on the engine access cover. Please contact the Division if there are questions pertaining to Type ‘D’ (transit) buses.
  • The lettering must be black characters four to six inches in height.
  • Retrofitting is optional. If this option is elected the labeling must conform to 575 IAC 1-1-4.5.
  • Don’t know the identification number to display? A listing of identification numbers is on the Division of School Traffic Safety and Emergency Planning’s web page at www.doe.in.gov/safety.

If you have questions or need further assistance please contact the Indiana Department of Education’s Division of School Traffic Safety and Emergency Planning by telephone at 317-232-0890 or by e-mail to tgummer@doe.in.gov.
