When the Home Schooled Child Returns
A Model*

When the home schooled child returns to public school the public school is faced with a decision concerning placement of the child. One model that takes into consideration the needs of the child and the responsibility of the public school is the following:

Grades K-8: Age appropriate

Grades 9-12: A committee is formed consisting of the parents, principal and guidance counselor. The committee is formed by the superintendent and reports to the superintendent.

1. Parents submit any and all pertinent materials including, but not limited to, test results, attendance records, and curriculum used by the parent/school.

2. The student is administered approved achievement tests consistent with the grade level expected for the student's age.

3. The student is administered final, end of course, examinations for all classes which are under consideration.

4. The committee will make a decision on what, if any, credit is to be given for the end of course tests and any work done in the home school. Grades will not be given.

*Most of this model is based on a board approved policy of Smith-Green School Corporation.
