Teachers
and parents should always carefully review any title on the
list for suitability of content, as well as for reading or
interest level, before sharing the book with a child, adolescent,
or young adult.
Q. What is the Indiana Reading List?
A. Designed as a companion piece to Indiana's new academic standards
for English/language arts, the selections in the Indiana Reading
List illustrate the quality and complexity of the materials
to be read by students at each grade level. The Indiana Reading
List is not required reading for students nor is it meant to
be all-inclusive.
Q. How was the Indiana Reading List compiled?
A. The reading list is a compilation of lists submitted from
school districts in Indiana, selections from a wide range of
award-winning literature and selections from lists developed
and published by professional associations. In spring 2000,
as part of the academic standards development work, the Department
of Education asked all Indiana schools to share their local
recommended reading lists. More than 100 schools responded.
Schools are encouraged to use these lists to develop local
reading selections. |
