Sec. 23. (a) An accurate daily record of the attendance of each child who is subject to
compulsory school attendance under section 17 of this chapter shall be kept by every public
and private school.
IC 20-33-2-17.5 Compulsory school attendance; exceptions; educationally related
non classroom activity; non classroom activity
Sec. 17.5. The governing body of a school corporation may authorize the absence and
excuse of a student who attends any educationally related non classroom activity. Any
educationally related non classroom activity and non classroom activity must meet all the
following conditions:
(1) Is consistent with and promotes the educational philosophy and goals of the school
corporation and the state board.
(2) Facilitates the attainment of specific educational objectives.
(3) Is a part of the goals and objectives of an approved course or curriculum.
(4) Represents a unique educational opportunity.
(5) Cannot reasonably occur without interrupting the school day.
(6) Is approved in writing by the school principal.

Attendance exception; service as a page for or as an honoree of the general
assembly
Sec. 14. (a) This section and sections 15 through 17.5 of this chapter apply to a student who
attends either a public school or a nonpublic school.
(b) Service as a page for or as an honoree of the general assembly is a lawful excuse for a
student to be absent from school, when verified by a certificate of the secretary of the senate
or the chief clerk of the house of representatives. A student excused from school attendance
under this section may not be recorded as being absent on any date for which the excuse is
operative and may not be penalized by the school in any manner.

IC 20-33-2-15
Attendance exception; service on precinct election board or for political candidates
or parties
Sec. 15. (a) The governing body of a school corporation and the chief administrative official of
a nonpublic secondary school system shall authorize the absence and excuse of each
secondary school student who serves:
(1) on the precinct election board; or
(2) as a helper to a political candidate or to a political party on the date of each general, city
or town, special, and primary election at which the student works.
(b) Before the date of the election, the student must submit a document signed by one (1) of
the student's parents giving permission to participate in the election as provided in this
section, and the student must verify to school authorities the performance of services by
submitting a document signed by the candidate, political party chairman, campaign manager,
or precinct officer generally describing the duties of the student on the date of the election. A
student excused from school attendance under this section may not be recorded as being
absent on any date for which the excuse is operative and may not be penalized by the school
in any manner.

IC 20-33-2-16
Attendance exception; witness in judicial proceeding
Sec. 16. The governing body of a school corporation or the chief administrative officer of a
nonpublic school system shall authorize the absence and excuse of a student who is issued a
subpoena to appear in court as a witness in a judicial proceeding. A student excused under
this section shall not be recorded as being absent on any date for which the excuse is
operative and shall not be penalized by the school in any manner. The appropriate school
authority may require that the student submit the subpoena to the appropriate school
authority for verification.

Attendance exception; duty with Indiana National Guard
Sec. 17. The governing body of a school corporation or the chief administrative officer of a
nonpublic school system shall authorize the absence and excuse of each secondary school
student who is ordered to active duty with the Indiana National Guard for not more than ten
(10) days in a school year. For verification, the student must submit to school authorities a
copy of the orders to active duty and a copy of the orders releasing the student from active
duty. A student excused from school attendance under this section may not be recorded as
being absent on any date for which the excuse is operative and may not be penalized by the
school in any manner.

511 IAC 1-3-3 Average daily enrollment

Sec. 3.
(b) Attendance shall be taken twice during each full student instructional day, once in the
morning session and once in the afternoon session. A student in attendance during any part of
the day, up to and including one-half (1/2) of the day, shall be counted as one-half (1/2). A
student in attendance for more than one-half (1/2) of the day shall be counted as one (1). A
full student instructional day shall be counted as one (1) in determining the number of student
instructional days in the regular school year.
(c) Attendance shall be taken once during each partial student instructional day. A student in
attendance during any part of the day shall be counted as one-half (1/2). A partial student
instructional day counts as one-half (1/2) in determining the number of student instructional
days in the regular school year.
HOMEBOUND INSTRUCTION
511 IAC 7-27-10 Instruction for student at student’s home or alternative setting
Sec. 10. (a) Providing special education instruction to a student identified as disabled in the
student=s home or alternative setting, for reasons other than identified in section 11 of this
rule, is an option if the case conference committee determines it to be the least restrictive
environment appropriate to enable the student to benefit from special education. If the case
conference committee determines the student=s placement to be the student=s home or an
alternate setting, the case conference committee report shall include:
(1) the reason the student is not attending school;
(2) other options tried or considered; and
(3) the reasons the other options were rejected.
(b) The case conference committee shall convene at least every sixty (60) instructional days
to review the individualized education program. The type, length, frequency, and duration of
the special education and related services shall be determined by the case conference
committee.
511 IAC 7-27-11 Instruction for students with injuries and temporary or chronic
illnesses
Sec. 11. (a) All students with injuries and temporary or chronic illnesses that preclude their
attendance in school shall be provided with instruction.
(b) Before instruction for a student unable to attend school can begin, the parent must provide
the school corporation with a written statement from a physician with an unlimited license to
practice medicine that states one (1) of the following:
(1) The student has a temporary illness or injury that will require the student=s absence from
school for a minimum of twenty (20) consecutive instructional days. If the illness or injury
occurs less than twenty (20) instructional days prior to the end of the school year and the
student needs instruction to meet promotion or graduation requirements, the physician=s
statement must indicate that the student will be unable to attend school through the end of
the current school year.
(2) The student has a chronic illness or other medical condition that will require the student=s
absence for an aggregate of at least twenty (20) instructional days over the period of the
school year.
(c) For a student with a disability who is unable to attend school as described in subsection
(b), special education and related services, including access to the general education
curriculum, shall be provided in accordance with the individualized education program as
determined by the case conference committee.
(d) Instruction provided under this rule may continue through the summer to enable a student
to complete a semester to meet promotion requirements.
(e) For a student identified as disabled under this article, instruction and related services shall
be provided by appropriately licensed personnel. For all other students, instruction shall be
provided by teachers licensed to teach the grade level of the student.
(f) The due process procedures provided in 511 IAC 7-30 do not apply to nondisabled students
who receive instruction under this rule.
