Student Information Systems

Many school corporations in Indiana use vendors for their Student Information Systems. The Department of Education has made efforts to keep vendors updated about the Student Test Numbers and other aspects of the project. The initial contact with vendors on this topic occurred in early 2000. Those school corporations not using a specific vendor were also invited.

The list on this page is the most complete list available to us at this time. Vendors are listed alphabetically. If there are corrections needed for the list, please include all pertinent information and contact us by sending mail to: stn_support@listserv.doe.state.in.us

The table below lists the contact information for each vendor. In addition, there are three columns: 1) STN ready; 2) Test Data Pass; and 3) XML ready. A description of each of the columns is as follows:

1. STN DATA TRANSFER READY

This section indicates that the vendor has reported that all necessary software is in place for submitting data to the Application Center according to the department's specifications. Codes are listed below:

C = Vendor has successfully sent a comma delimited version of specified files
P = Vendor has successfully sent a Positional (fixed length record) version of this file
X = Vendor has successfully sent an XML version of the specified files

Any of the above formats are acceptable this year.

2. XML READY

To simplify data reporting, the Department is moving to Extensible Markup Language (XML) a way to reduce the burden on local schools and to improve the accuracy of data reported. To use this method of reporting will require that software for local student information systems include XML capability. XML will implemented in phases. As information is released for a specific data request from the Department, and as vendors make the necessary additions to their software to be capable of reporting in this manner, it will be reported here. XML readiness will be reported by request. For example, the Pupil Enrollment report will be accepted using XML starting in fall 2002. The chart will indicate which vendors are prepared to use XML in their software.

If vendors have successfully sent XML data for any of the reports an X will appear in the XML column. As we become more sophisticated in the use of XML and as vendors more tightly integrate XML into their software packages, this chart will be changed to illustrate that. Vendors will be responsible for arranging testing with department staff. A calendar will be released far enough in advance of a report to enable all vendors to participate. Staff members will be available at specific times for testing. While staff may be able to help trouble shoot minor problems, because of a limited staff, extensive technical assistance and training will not be possible. Therefore, vendors should arrange testing only after there is a reasonable certainty that all steps have been taken to ensure the success of the test.
