When is a child required to be in school?

Answer:

A child is required to attend school beginning with the school year in which the child becomes 7 years of age (I.C. 20-33-2-6).  A child who will attend a nonaccredited, nonpublic school is required to attend school no later than the date on which the child turns 7 years of age (I.C.20-33-2-8). Note that the starting age for Kindergarten (age five by August 1) does not not affect the starting age for First Grade.  There is no requirement that a child must be 6 years old by August 1 in order to attend First Grade.
