SCN - Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Program

The Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Program (FFVP) is a federally assisted program providing free fresh fruits and vegetables to students in participating elementary schools during the school day.

The goal of the FFVP is to improve children’s overall diet and create healthier eating habits to impact their present and future health. The FFVP will help schools create healthier school environments by providing healthier food choices; expanding the variety of fruits and vegetables children experience; and increasing children's fruit and vegetable consumption.

"I am excited about the fruits and vegetable program because I think I have the world’s pickiest eater. His ideal lunch consists of bacon, French fries, chicken skin, ice cream, and maybe on a good day chicken nuggets. This program has opened his eyes to trying new foods like pears, pineapples, oranges, and bananas. I know the fruits were more accepted than vegetables, but for me, it is fun to go to the store and have him ask for things he has tried at school. I like the fact he makes the connection of having certain snacks when we see them at the store. My husband finds it funny because he does not usually like to try new foods, and NOW he is excited!! This is a great program not only for my children at home but also for my students in the classroom. On Wednesday, March 3, we had broccoli sprouts, and at first, most students really did not like it. I explained to my students that it tasted like broccoli and a radish together. They actually asked for seconds and thirds, and we emptied our container!!!! Having students exposed to these new fruits and vegetables has been a great!! Like the doctor says, it takes exposure of more than once to get children to like new things." -- excerpt from a letter to IDOE from a parent
