SUBJECT:     Indiana Teacher Reading Academies

In 2007 the Indiana General Assembly passed legislation, P.L. 234-2007, that required the State Board of Education support Indiana educators in providing child centered, learning focused programs in the early grades.  Specifically, the statute identifies scientifically proven methods of teaching reading, the use of data to guide instruction, and the use of age appropriate literacy assessments as vital components of effective learning programs.  To meet this charge, the Indiana Department of Education and the Indiana Educational Service Centers have developed the Indiana Teacher Reading Academy (ITRA) to introduce Indiana educators to Scientifically Based Reading Instruction concepts and practices.

The Indiana Teacher Reading Academy is an intensive, two day training in reading instruction that may be applied to any reading program.  The Academy is intended for reading instructors grades K-3, administrators, reading specialists, special educators and all educators who plan and implement early reading instruction.  All participants will learn about:

  • Scientifically Based Reading Research (SBRR) and Scientifically Based Reading Instruction (SBRI)
  • The five components of reading instruction
    • Phonemic Awareness
    • Phonics
    • Vocabulary
    • Fluency
    • Comprehension
  • Assessment and how assessment data can be organized drive instructional decisions
  • State Standards
  • Classroom management and organization of SBRI classrooms
  • The RTI Three Tier model of intervention

The Indiana Teacher Reading Academy has been designed to meet the needs of teachers in each of the early grades. Academy participants will spend most of their time with same grade level colleagues on the elements of SBRI that apply directly to their students.

Participants leave with a firm overview of SBRI, both theory and practice.  The materials provided will serve as a valuable resource as teachers move to implement SBRI based reading programs with their students.  Administrators and school leaders leave with the information they need to support and guide the growth of student reading achievement in their schools.

The Indiana Department of Education would like to invite Indiana educators who are responsible for reading instruction in grades K-3 to participate in the Indiana Teacher Reading Academy.  To find out how to your staff can attend the Indiana Teacher Reading Academy contact a regional Indiana Education Service Center http://www.doe.in.gov/htmls/esc.html or follow this link to the Office of Early Learning and Literacy at the Indiana Department of Education (formerly the Division of Primetime) http://www.doe.in.gov/primetime/welcome.html
