1003g Summary of SIG Grants

Posted: Thu, 10/03/2013 - 2:29pm Updated: Thu, 05/28/2015 - 8:47am

School Improvement Grants (SIG), authorized under section 1003(g) of Title I of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act of 1965 (Title I or ESEA), are grants to State educational agencies (SEAs) that SEAs use to make competitive subgrants to local educational agencies (LEAs) that demonstrate the greatest need for the funds and the strongest commitment to use the funds to provide adequate resources in order to raise substantially the achievement of students in their lowest-performing schools. Under the final requirements published in the Federal Register on October 28, 2010, school improvement funds are to be focused on each State’s “Tier I” and “Tier II” schools. With Indiana’s ESEA Flexibility Waiver, schools are no longer identified in Tiers, but as Reward, Focus-Targeted, Focus, or Priority status. LEAs with priority schools in Indiana are eligible to apply for SIG funds. The LEA must implement one of four school intervention models: turnaround model, restart model, school closure, or transformation model.
