Indiana Learning Evaluation Readiness Network (ILEARN) is designed to measure Indiana Academic Standards. Test design centered on understanding these standards, collaborating with Indiana Educators to define content priorities and evidence of mastery, and creating key documents that define the assessment. These key documents are explained and provided below.
Blueprints define the essential content which will be measured by the assessment. Indiana educator committees, in collaboration with content experts, created the test blueprints for ILEARN. The resources below explain how to understand and use the ILEARN blueprints to support instruction.
|Mathematics||English Language Arts||Science||Social Studies|
|Grade 3||Grade 3|
|Grade 4||Grade 4||Grade 4|
|Grade 5||Grade 5||Grade 5|
|Grade 6||Grade 6||Grade 6|
|Grade 7||Grade 7|
|Grade 8||Grade 8|
|Biology||U.S. Government (optional)|
NOTE: Grade 4 and 6 Science blueprints incorporate Computer Science Standards. These are noted in the blueprint document with references of 3-5 or 6-8 as defined in the Indiana Academic Standards.
ILEARN measures the breadth of Indiana Academic Standards. This means that all standards are represented in the blueprints, including Content Area Literacy, Media Literacy, Listening, and Computer Science Standards.
Item Specifications define exactly how each standard will be measured. These documents are used by professional item writers to create items and include information such as evidence statements, Depth of Knowledge requirements, and sample items.

Per the recommendations of the 2016 ISTEP+ Panel, the Indiana Department of Education is leveraging quality content from third-party item banks for use on ILEARN assessments. These item banks are accompanied by item specifications which will be utilized where alignment was confirmed by Indiana educators. The item specifications available are described in the table below.
|Specification||Developer||Content Areas Included|
|Indiana Item Specifications||Developed by Indiana for Indiana standards and define custom item development||Mathematics, English/Language Arts, Science, Social Studies|
|ICCR Item Specifications*
|Developed by Cambium Assessments, Inc. (CAI) for their Independent College-and-Career-Ready item bank.||Mathematics, English/Language Arts, Science|
|Smarter Balanced Item Specifications*||Developed by Smarter Balanced for their Smarter Balanced item bank.||Mathematics, English/Language Arts|
*Some third-party item specifications include content beyond the scope of the associated Indiana Academic Standards. For these specifications, only those portions which align to the Indiana Academic Standard are used for ILEARN assessments. Indiana educators approved alignment of items to each Indiana Standard.
