The Lexile Framework® for Reading, commonly referred to as the Lexile Framework, has been linked with the ILEARN English/Language Arts (ELA) at grades 3-8. Similarly, the Quantile Framework® for Mathematics has been linked with the ILEARN Mathematics assessments for grades 3-8. Indiana students also may be receiving Lexile and Quantile measures from a variety of different tests and programs used by their local schools. Students’ Lexile and Quantile measures are constantly changing as students grow in knowledge and skills. These measures give educators and parents valuable information about student abilities and also help them to see growth between assessments.

What is a Lexile measure?

Lexiles measure two things: the strength of a student’s reading skills and the difficulty/complexity of a text, like a book or a magazine article. Lexile measures are expressed as numbers followed by an “L” (for example, 850L), and represent a position on the Lexile scale. Comparing a student’s Lexile measure with the Lexile measure of what they are reading helps gauge the “fit” between a student’s ability and the difficulty of text.

For example, a student reading at a Lexile of 500L may find a book that is a Lexile of 450L easy and fun to read in their spare time. The teacher may want to provide that student with a book that is a Lexile of 550L or 600L to stretch the student’s abilities. A book that is 700L would likely require significant support for the student to comprehend.

What is a Quantile measure?

Quantiles also measure two things. The student measure describes what mathematics the student already understands and what the student is ready to learn in the future, while the skill measure describes how complex a concept or skill may be to learn. Parents and teachers can use Quantiles to check that students are growing and to find instructional materials that target student needs right where they are.
