Licensure Test Transition Beginning July 1, 2021:

IDOE is pleased to announce that many of the Praxis content and pedagogy licensure tests approved for use in Indiana will be available for early administration starting Thursday, July 1. The Department has been working with both the current and incoming licensure test vendors to provide an earlier transition between the Pearson CORE and the Educational Testing Service (ETS) Praxis test programs than previously planned. By transitioning to the new test program early, IDOE is working to provide greater convenience for prospective teachers -- allowing them the option to use either test during this transition period. During the period of July 1-August 31, the CORE and Praxis licensure test programs will operate in parallel.

Praxis test registration and preparation materials, including one free interactive practice test per test area, will be open and available in mid-May. More details about how to access the registration site and preparation materials will be provided later this spring. Here is a list of license content areas and corresponding Praxis tests with Indiana cut scores for reference.

Transition details for licensure areas currently requiring multiple content tests can be found here.

Indiana Developmental/Pedagogy Exam

Under the current licensing rules, REPA/REPA3, a pedagogy/developmental exam is required for all individuals that are applying for their first initial practitioner instructional license in addition to any required content exams. The pedagogy exams cover the strategies of teaching such as Methodology, Classroom Management, Student Development and Diversity, Learning Processes, Learning Environment, Instructional Planning, Assessments and the Professional Environment as a teacher at the respective developmental levels. These are topics that are covered in a teacher preparation program.

CASA and Alternatives

CASA and Alternatives
As of July 1, 2019, successful completion of the basic skills testing requirement (CASA or an approved alternative) will no longer be mandatory for educator candidates. However, educator preparation programs may elect to continue to require CASA for program admission. This change was made by the 2019 Indiana General Assembly. To determine whether you need to take the CASA assessment, contact your educator preparation program directly.
