During the 2010 legislative session, the General Assembly passed SEA 316, and the Governor signed IC 20-19-3-10 into law. The legislation requires the Indiana Department of Education (IDOE), in collaboration with organizations that have expertise in dating violence, domestic violence, and sexual abuse to identify or develop and make available to schools; (a) Model dating violence educational materials, and (b) A model for dating violence response policies and reporting by July 1, 2011. To that end, the information included in the Guidance Document and other documents and links available on this webpage, represent the plan toward the identification of available teen dating violence prevention and intervention materials, as well as suggested policy and reporting guidance. Although the use of the materials by schools is optional, we hope the available information will prove to be helpful in the planning and implementation of instruction and policy development.
Educational Materials Guidelines and Assessment Process
Throughout Indiana, both school and community-based practitioners are currently addressing the topic of teen dating violence through the provision of a variety of dating, intimate partner, and sexual violence prevention programs and curricula in both school and out-of-school settings. These programs and curricula have been developed in different ways, were obtained from a variety of sources, and are providing valuable assistance to schools. To assist school personnel in identifying accurate teen dating violence prevention materials based on sound prevention messages and principles, the IDOE has developed a set of guidelines and an assessment process based on Virginia’s Guidelines for the Primary Prevention of Sexual Violence and Intimate Partner Violence, and Assessment Tool. The materials identified through this process will assist schools - especially those serving grades six through twelve – with the selection and implementation of student oriented dating violence education programs.
Response Policies and Reporting
The Department has developed a model for dating violence response policies and reporting which is based on recommendations from both national and state level experts. The information and recommendations provided are made available to assist school personnel in the development of guidelines and policies which will be specific and appropriate for their school corporation.
