Background on this Tool
This coaching toolkit was developed by The Australian Institute for Teaching and School Leadership. The toolkit defines best practices for a coaching cycle without prescribing one specific approach to teacher development. The toolkit aims to provide actionable guidance to instructional coaches across all phases of their work, with an emphasis on helping coaches develop and maintain collaborative relationships with their teachers.
Guidance on How to Leverage this Tool
The toolkit is organized around four phases of instructional coaching: Planning, Contracting, Coaching, and Evaluating. For each of these phases, the toolkit provides resources to adopt or adapt as templates to guide the effective planning and implementation of an instructional coaching model.
Getting Started with the Coaching Toolkit for Teachers
District leaders, school leaders, instructional coaches are encouraged to collectively reflect on the strengths and areas for growth of the school's existing instructional coaching model. Informed by those reflections, leaders should then review this toolkit to identify the most relevant resources for the school's needs..
