Six Steps for Effective Feedback

Background on this Tool

The Six Steps for Effective Feedback guide was developed by Uncommon Schools, a non-profit charter organization. This teacher feedback tool is one resource among a host of those created to aid leaders in implementing an effective coaching cycle focused on instructional development.

Guidance on How to Leverage this Tool

This guide serves as a tool to utilize during the feedback session of a coaching cycle. The guide takes coaches through six steps for effective feedback titled: Prepare, Praise, Probe, Action Step, Plan Ahead, Practice, and Follow-Up. Each step provides guided tasks and questions for an engaging feedback session that results in action aimed at growth and professional development.

Getting Started with the Six Steps to Effective Feedback

District leaders, school leaders, and/or instructional coaches are encouraged to collaboratively discuss how this tool could be used to provide teachers with actionable feedback and opportunities to practice applying feedback. Leaders at multiple levels could also practice using this tool to develop their own teacher coaching skills.
